For the past 8 years Larry Grable has been the Executive Director of Service Center for Independent Life, (SCIL), one of the 28 Independent Living Centers in California. Prior to that he was the Chair of the Board of Directors. Before working for SCIL he worked for the Office of the Governor for 8 years as the Director of the Inland Empire Field Office. Prior to that he worked for Senator Jim Brulte as a Field Representative. 

Larry is the Chair of the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers. Larry is also a commissioner on  the San Bernardino County Aging Commission. Larry sits on Aging Next Advisory Council. Larry is married for 26 years with 3 children and 3 grandkids.

TJ Hill is the Executive Director of the Disability Community Resource Center, an Independent Living Center located in Mar Vista that serves people with disabilities across Western Los Angeles County. Mr. Hill has over 20 years of policy experience in intersectional social justice relating to disability, special education, mental health, healthcare, employment, labor and housing. Mr. Hill received his Juris Doctor degree from the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis and his Bachelor of Arts degree, in Psychology, from the University of Arizona. He lives with his husband and their daughter in Santa Monica, California.

Michael Costa, MPP, is the Executive Director of the California Association of Area Agencies on Aging (C4A). He is a senior healthcare and aging policy professional with more than 30 years’ experience in strategic planning, health policy analysis, program management, and provider network development. For the past 10 years he has led and advised projects developing innovative models of integrated healthcare and social service delivery for an aging population, with the primary goal of enhancing older adults’ ability to live independently.

Christina N. Mills has served as the Executive Director of the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) since 2017, and she has over 20 years of disability rights and independent living center services experience. As Executive Director of CFILC, Christina is responsible for seamlessly implementing six statewide programs while also building the capacity of her Independent Living Center members

Assemblymember James C. Ramos

Welcome Song

Assemblymember James C. Ramos, a lifelong resident of the San Manuel Indian Reservation in San Bernardino County, is a member of the Serrano/Cahuilla tribe. Ramos, the first California Native American to serve in the California State Assembly, was elected to represent residents of the 40th District on November 6, 2018. His district includes the cities of Highland, Loma Linda, Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, and San Bernardino.

“Loneliness versus Wisdom in the Era of Pandemics”

Dilip V. Jeste, M.D., is the Senior Associate Dean for Healthy Aging, and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at University of California San Diego. His main areas of research include schizophrenia, neuropsychiatric interventions, and successful aging. Dr. Jeste has published over 750 peer-reviewed papers and 14 books, including “Wiser” (with Scott LaFee) which was chosen by Next Big Idea Club as one of the “8 Must-Read Books of Winter 2021.”

“Social Isolation, Loneliness, and Suicide: What We Need to Know During These Uncertain Times”

Patrick Arbore, Ed.D, began his career in the field of aging in 1972. He is the Founder and Director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services (CESP), a program of Institute on Aging in San Francisco. He conceived the 24-hour accredited Friendship Line in 1973 and Friendship Line California as well as the methodology for the traumatic grief services in the early 1980’s.  Field Office. Prior to that he worked for Senator Jim Brulte as a Field Representative.

Kathryn L. Crain, LCSW, is a licensed Clinical Social Worker who graduated with a Master’s in Social Work degree in 1999 from the University of Southern California. For the past five years, Ms. Crain has been with the Outpatient Services Division as a Program Manager I coordinating the older adult clinical services, Anti-Stigma and Discrimination (ASD) team, Service Extender volunteer program, and inter-departmental collaboration projects. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to serving disenfranchised populations, consulting with colleagues for the emotional well-being of the community, field instruction for M.S.W. students, and maintaining a private practice.

Haydeh Fakhrabadi, Psy.D., CPII

Dr. Haydeh Fakhrabadi is a licensed Clinical Psychologist who is fluent in English and Farsi. She received her M.A. in Clinical Health Psychology in 2001 and graduated from Pepperdine University with Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology in 2006. Dr. Fakhrabadi has been employed by Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) since 2008; she joined the Older Adult System of Care Administration in January of 2011. She works with Older Adult Prevention and Early Intervention Anti-Stigma and Discrimination and Suicide Prevention teams providing education to older adults, their support systems, and caregivers.

Aileen Montoya, MPA, currently works with the Partners in Suicide Prevention unit with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. She has over ten years’ experience working in the community providing suicide prevention education and training to the County of Los Angeles and has been certified as a trainer in ASIST, MHFA, QPR, Talk Saves Lives, Recognize, Intervene, Support, Empower (RISE – LGBTQ+ suicide prevention model through the LA Gay and Lesbian Center) and Suicide Prevention Ongoing Resiliency Training 2 (SPORT2, a school-based suicide prevention model).

Veronica A. Kelley, DSW, LCSW, is the Director for the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health and oversees the daily operations for both Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services. Veronica is a member of the Governing Board for the County Behavioral Health Directors Association of California (CBHDA), serving as the President Elect, she sits on the Executive Committee, serves as the Co-Chair for the Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment (SAPT) Committee and is the Co-Chair for the Cultural Competency, Equity & Social Justice (CCESJ) Committee.

Dr. Sevet Johnson is a licensed Clinical Psychologist, and the appointed Director for the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department, which oversees the County Mental Health Plan serving approximately 18,000 clients per year through outpatient services. Accomplishments she is proud of include the expansion of a Latino Outreach Program and its’ adaptation to respond to populations significantly impacted by COVID, developing the first staff survey for the Department and leading the Department in piloting the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System to expand coverage for those with substance use issues.

Antonette (Toni) Navarro is the Executive Director of Tri-City Mental Health Authority. TCMHA is a public behavioral health agency responsible to provide the outpatient specialty mental health needs for the cities of Claremont, La Verne, and Pomona, CA. Toni is a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 30 years of experience working in the publicly funded mental health system in California; 20 of those in leadership positions.

Patricia Jackson-Kelley is a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, who served for 26 years. She is the current National President of the National Association of Black Military Women. Patricia also serves on Board of Directors for Foundation for Women Warriors.

For over 50 years, Shad Meshad has been a therapist and advocate for Veterans’ rights. He holds an MSW in psychiatric social work from Florida State University. He served as a psych officer in Vietnam, continuing to counsel VN Vets on the streets of LA. In 1985, he founded the National Veterans Foundation.

Angel Soriano, LCSW, is a Psychiatric Social Worker II with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN). He is currently serving as the VPAN Community Suicide Prevention Coordinator. He now serves in the United States Marine Corps as a Reservist as the Marine for Life Representative for Los Angeles.

Maria Kelley, OTR/L, ATP received her degree in Occupational Therapy from Ohio State University and her ATP certification from RESNA. She is a Senior Assistive Technology Specialist with the Washington Assistive Technology Act Program. Maria has extensive experience conducting assistive technology evaluations, worksite, and home modifications.

Denise Noguera is an experienced gerontologist, having earned a bachelor’s degree in human services with a minor in gerontology, and a master’s degree in gerontology. She has more than a decade of experience working in both private and public sectors. Denise has primarily worked in evidence-based programming for the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging (VCAAA), both in care transitions and the Fall Prevention Program.

Keith Lamar Williams, Assistive Technology Coordinator at The Disability Community Resource Center (DCRC) in west Los Angeles County. He is the Administrator of the Digital Bridge and Microsoft Broadband Programs. Serving the Disability Community for the past 10 years. He has worked as a Consultant at The Braille Institute, a graduate of the Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Program (ATACP) and help developed the Center for Assistive Technology.
